Panel 1: “Towards a full Verticals integration in 5G-Advanced and 6G systems and Standards”

Riccardo Trivisonno (IEEE M’08, SM’19) is currently serving as Head of Network Architecture for the Advanced Wireless Technologies Lab (AWTL) at Huawei Technologies, Munich Research Center. His research and standardization group develops technologies in the areas of Network Architecture, Core Network and Network Management. The group focuses on 5G/B5G systems, and on 3GPP/ETSI standards. He joined Huawei Technologies in 2011. He has been chairman of 5G-IA pre-standardization WG since 2020. He holds a PhD and an MSc in Telecommunications Engineering from University of Bologna (achieved in 2005 and 2000, respectively).

David Gonzalez
David Gonzalez G. has over 15 years research experience in the field of cellular communications. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, Spain, in 2013. In 2014, he joined Aalto University, Finland, and served for over 3 years as post-doctoral researcher. In 2017, Dr. Gonzalez joined the Panasonic Research and Development Center, Germany, where he served as delegate in 3GPP. Since May 2018, Dr. Gonzalez is with Continental AG, Germany, and serves as Senior Research Engineer focusing on 3GPP standardization, project management, and basic and applied research in the field of V2X and Wireless Communications.

 

  • Michael Kranzfelder (Technische Universitat Munchen, Germany)
Michael Kranzfelder studied medicine in Budapest and Wurzburg. He works a consultant surgeon at the Department of Surgery, Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technical University Munich. He completed his postdoctoral thesis to qualify as a professor in 2015 on the topic “adaptive and cooperative surgical systems”. His research focus are intelligent cooperative OR- systems, robot-assisted surgery, and mobile data communication in the healthcare sector (total impact factor: >60, H-index: 5). Dr. Kranzfelder has acquired numerous third-party funded projects, including research on 5G telecommunication applications in the healthcare domain. He is a founding board member of the one6G association.

 

  • Mona Ghassemian (Interdigital, UK)
Mona Ghassemian
Mona Ghassemian received her PhD from King’s College London (KCL) with NTT DoCoMo scholarship. She continued at KCL as a research associate in E-Sense (a FP6 EU project) in 2006 & 2007. She worked as a lecturer and senior lecturer at KCL, Uni of Greenwich and SBU, teaching courses and supervising at BSc, MSc, and PhD levels in 2006-2007, 2007-2012, and 2012-2018, respectively. She switched to industry research to work at BT research lab at Adastral park with a focus on the security of 5G and IoT technologies 2019-2021. She currently works as senior R&I manager at InterDigital, Inc leading the next generation networking research team

 

  • Costas Samdanis (Nokia Bell Labs)
Costas Samdanis
Costas Samdanis is a Rresearch Project Manager at Nokia Bell Labs Munich involved in standardization activities on 5G core networks. He was a visiting researcher at Aalto University and a principal researcher at Huawei German Research Center Munich, focusing on 5G carrier networks. Previously, he worked for NEC Europe Heidelberg as a senior researcher and a broad-band standardization specialist. He received his Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees from Kings College London.

 

  • Vincenzo Sciancalepore (NEC)
Vincenzo Sciancalepore
Vincenzo Sciancalepore received his M.Sc. degree in Telecommunications Engineering and Telematics Engineering in 2011 and 2012, respectively, whereas in 2015, he received a double Ph.D. degree. Currently, he is a Principal Researcher at NEC Laboratories Europe in Heidelberg, focusing his activity on network virtualization and network slicing challenges. He is the Chair of the IEEE ComSoc Emerging Technologies Initiative (ETI) on Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) and an editor of IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications.

 

  • Romano Giovanni (Telecom Italia, 5GSolutions, Italy)
Romano Giovanni
Giovanni Romano is currently coordinating TIM activities on technical standards related to radio access and spectrum. In October 2016 Giovanni was nominated Alternate Board Director, representing TIM in NGMN. Since 1996 Giovanni has been active in several international standardisation fora and he is currently attending 3GPP RAN and NGMN. He is the 3GPP appointed coordinator for the exchange of information between 3GPP and ITU-R and coordinated the submission of 3GPP “5G” towards IMT-2020. Giovanni served as Vice-Chairman of 3GPP Technical Specification Group RAN for the period 2013-2017. Until 2005, Giovanni was project leader of several activities within the R&D center of Telecom Italia, including UMTS performance evaluation, quality of service verification, standardisation, field trials and testing..

Aggeliki Sgora is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Digital Media and Communication at the Ionian University, since July 2019. From January 2018 to July 2019 she was Vice President for the electronic communications sector of the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT). During this period she is was also an Alternate Member of the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) Board from EETT, as well as, a Member of the BEREC Office Management Committee from EETT. From November 2015 to March 2017, she worked as a Special Scientist at the General Secretariat for Media and Communication and during the period March-November 2017, as a Special Advisor at the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media.

Ines Robles
Maria Ines Robles is an IoT researcher at FAST-Lab (Future Automation Systems and Technologies Laboratory) in Tampere University, Finland. At the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) she serves as co-chair of Routing over low power and lossy network (ROLL) Working Group, co-chair of the IoT directorate, member of routing directorate and member of general area review team. Currently, she works developing IoT solutions for Industrial 4.0 use cases. She started as a researcher at the GridTICs laboratory at the National Technological University in Mendoza, Argentina.

 

  • Marco Carugi (Rapporteur/Mentor of ITU-T SG20 and Huawei, France)
Marco Carugi’s technical areas of current involvement include IoT and Smart Cites, Future Networks incl. IMT-2020/5G and Network 2030, AI/ML and Autonomous Networks. He has professional experience in R&D and technology strategy, and he has worked in different market roles in Solvay group, Orange Labs, Nortel Networks CTO division, ZTE R&D Technology Strategy. He has been engaged in consultancy activities with various customers, including NEC (2015-2018), and is presently consultant for Huawei Technologies, European Research branch (since October 2018). Marco is active in standardization since long time, leading standards specifications in different domains (NGN, IoT/M2M, Big Data, IMT2020) and holding leadership positions. In the current 2017-2020 ITU-T study period, he serves as Rapporteur for Q2/20 (“Requirements, capabilities and architectural frameworks across verticals enhanced by emerging digital technologies”) and co-Rapporteur for Q20/13 (“Networks beyond IMT-2020 and Machine Learning: Requirements and Architecture”), and has been Champion of the Use Case Analysis and Requirements deliverable within the Focus Group on Data Processing and Management to support IoT and Smart Cities and Communities, as well as Editor of the Use Cases and Requirements deliverable within the ITU-T Focus Group on Technologies for Network 2030. He is one of the expert team members of the IEC-ISO-ITU Joint Smart Cities Task Force and serves as leader of the WG Standardization High Level Architecture Subgroup in the Alliance for IoT Innovation (AIOTI). During 2018 he acted as Rapporteur for the European Commission in the joint MSP/DEI WG on Standardisation in support of Digitising European Industry and Editor of the Final Report of the WG (Dec 2018).

 

  • Sharief Oteafy (DePaul University, USA)
Sharief Oteafy
Sharief Oteafy is an Assistant Professor at the School of Computing, DePaul University, USA. He is the lead technical editor of the IEEE P1918.1 Tactile Internet Standard, and currently co-leads the team working on the Tactile Internet Architecture. Dr. Oteafy co-authored a book on “Dynamic Wireless Sensor Networks”, presented 60+ publications and delivered multiple IEEE tutorials on IoT and Big Sensed Data. He co-chaired a number of IEEE symposia and workshops in conjunction with IEEE ICC and IEEE LCN. He is currently an Associate Editor with IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Access, and on the editorial board of Wiley’s Internet Technology Letters.

 

  • Georgios Z. Papadopoulos (IMT Atlantique, France)
Georgios Z. Papadopoulos
Georgios Z. Papadopoulos serves as an Associate Professor at the IMT Atlantique in Rennes, France, and as a Research Scientist at the IRT in Rennes, France. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Bristol. He received his HDR from University of Rennes 1 in 2021, his PhD from University of Strasbourg, in 2015 with honors, his M.Sc. in Telematics Engineering from University Carlos III of Madrid in 2012 and his B.Sc. in Informatics from Alexander T.E.I. of Thessaloniki in 2011. He actively participates at the IETF standards organization with multiple drafts in the ROLL, DetNet, 6lo, and RAW Working Groups.

 

  • Manos Pateromichelakis (Lenovo, Germany)
Manos Pateromichelakis
Emmanouil (Manos) Pateromichelakis received his MSc and PhD degree in Mobile Communications from University of Surrey, UK in 2009 and 2013 respectively. Thereafter, for the period 2013-2015 he was working as post-doc researcher in the ICS at University of Surrey. For the period 2015-2020, he was working as Senior Research and Standards Engineer in Huawei Technologies, and was involved in numerous EU-funded research projects and 3GPP standardization activities. Since 2020, he works as a Senior 5G Wireless Researcher at Lenovo Germany. He is currently Lenovo’s 3GPP prime SA6 delegate, with main focus on verticals and their integration with 3GPP networks. He is also Lenovo’s representative at O-RAN WG3 (focusing on AI-enabled RAN optimization and RIC architecture). He is Senior IEEE member and an associate editor in IEEE Access. He has more than 50 publications (including IEEE journals, a 5G book, and book chapters) and he has filed more than 60 patents in the area of 5G and beyond.

 

Panel 4: “Standards for Vertical Industries”

Adam Drobot is an experienced technologist. His activities are strategic consulting, start-ups, and industry associations. He is the Chairman of the Board of OpenTechWorks, Inc. He also serves on the Boards of multiple early-stage companies. In the past he was the President of the Applied Research at Telcordia Technologies (Bellcore) and the company’s CTO. Before that he was the Senior Vice President for Science and Technology at SAIC/LEIDOS. Adam is a member of the FCC Technological Advisory Council and recently Co-Chaired the Working Group on Artificial Intelligence. In the past, he was on the Board of the Telecommunications Industry Association where he Chaired the Technology Committee, the US DoT ITS Program Advisory Committee, and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute External Advisory Board. Over the years he has been active in IEEE and served as the Chair of, multiple Committees and multiple major conferences, including the IEEE IoT Activities Board. He has published over 150 journal articles and holds 27 patents. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society. His degrees include a BA in Engineering Physics from Cornell University and a PhD. in Plasma Physics from the University of Texas.

  • Rob Fish (Past-President of the IEEE Standards Association)
Rob Fish
Rob Fish is faculty in the Department of Computer Science of Princeton University and is also President of NETovations, LLC, a consulting company focused on the creation of communications and network innovation. From 2007 to 2010, he was Chief Product Officer and Senior VP at Mformation, Inc. a startup specializing in carrier software for mobile device management. From 1997 to 2007, Rob was Vice President and Managing Director of Panasonic US R&D laboratories working on embedding networking into consumer devices. Prior to this, he was Executive Director, Multimedia Communications Research at Bellcore/Telcordia where he pioneered informal video communications and presence mechanisms. He started his career at Bell Laboratories after receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University. Dr. Fish has been awarded 17 patents. He is a Fellow of the IEEE. Dr. Fish is immediate Past-President of the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA) and a member of the Board of Governors of IEEE SA. He also chairs the IEEE Edge-Cloud Standards Committee. He was a member of the IEEE Communications Society Board of Governors and former VP of Industry and Standards. He co-founded and was the Steering Committee chair of the IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference. He currently chairs the IEEE BoD Industry Engagement Committee. During his career, Dr. Fish and his organizations have initiated and managed standards development activities in IEEE, ISO/IEC JTC1, 3GPP, OMA, IETF, ATSC, CableLabs, OSGi, and probably a few others. Dr. Fish was the recipient of ComSoc’s MMTC Distinguished Service Award and was awarded the Standards Medallion of the IEEE Standards Association.

 

  • Brian K. Daly (Assistant Vice President, AT&T Services, Inc., USA)
Brian K. Daly oversees AT&T’s strategy and leadership in global industry standards as Assistant Vice President for Standards & Industry Alliances for AT&T. Brian is a technology visionary and thought leader with knowledge of the global standards industry landscape/leadership. Brian has a broad technology perspective including 5 to 10-year trends, with focus on emerging technologies for 5G and beyond including public safety/mission critical services for FirstNet; earthquake early warning and wireless emergency alerts; C-V2X and UAS/UAVs; cybersecurity, NSEP, and critical infrastructure protection. Brian is engaged in programs with the DHS, DISA, and DoD, and is a leading contributor to the Alliance for Telecommunication Industry Solutions (ATIS) Board, TOPS Council and Standards Committee initiatives, resulting in the implementation of key industry standards. Brian is on the Executive Committee of the National Spectrum Consortium and holds appointments to the FCC’s Technological Advisory Council (TAC) and Communications Reliability, Security, and Interoperability Council (CSRIC). Brian also is a member of the FBI’s Infragard partnership. Brian holds Board positions on the National Public Safety Communications Council (NPSTC) and the IEEE International Standards and Technology Organization (IEEE-ISTO). Brian’s industry leadership roles include Co-chair of the Next G Alliance Steering Group, co-chair of the O-Ran Alliance Standards Development Focus Group, Chair of the GSM Association’s North American Fraud Forum and Security Group, and former co-chair of the ANSI Unmanned Aircraft Systems Standardization Collaborative Critical Infrastructure & Environment working group.

Daniel R. Isaacs
Dan Isaacs is Chief Technology Officer of Digital Twin Consortium (DTC), responsible for establishing and executing the technical direction, liaison partnerships and business development support for new memberships. Prior to DTC, Dan was Director of Strategic Marketing and Business Development at Xilinx, responsible for Automotive Business Development – Automated Driving and ADAS systems and responsible for emerging technologies: AI/Machine Learning, ecosystem strategy for the IIoT. With 25+ years experience, working in Automotive, Mil/Aero and Consumer-based companies including Ford, NEC, LSI Logic and Hughes Aircraft, Dan has delivered keynotes, seminars, served as panelist and moderator at World Forums and Global conferences. As member of international advisory boards with degrees in Computer Engineering: EE from Cal State University, B.S. Geophysics from ASU.

 

  • Dario Sabella (Chairman of ETSI MEC and Intel, Germany)
Dario Sabella
Dario Sabella works with Intel as Senior Manager Standards and Research, acting also as company delegate of the 5GAA (5G Automotive Association). In his role within Next Generation Standards division, Dario is driving new technologies and edge cloud innovation for the new communication systems, involved in standard ecosystem harmonization and coordinating internal alignment on edge computing across SDOs and industry groups, in support of internal and external stakeholders/customers. In February 2021 has been elected as Chairman of ETSI MEC (Multi-access Edge Computing), while from 2019 he was serving as vice-chairman, previously Lead of Industry Groups, and from 2015 vice-chair of IEG WG. Since 2017 he is also delegate of 5GAA (5G Automotive Association). Since joining TIM in 2001, he has been involved in a wide range of internal and external projects (including FP7 and H2020 EU funded projects), often with leadership roles. From January 2021 he is Innovation Manager of Hexa-X, a flagship 6G project funded by EC.

 

  • Narendra Mangra (Principal, GlobeNet, LLC, USA)
Narendra Mangra
Narendra Mangra is a transdisciplinary advisor, consultant, and Principal at GlobeNet LLC. His experience spans strategy development, standards development, wireless network design and deployment, procurements, and program management. He has worked with end clients across mobile and fixed broadband telecommunications, public safety, health care, agriculture, and the transportation ecosystems. Narendra is also the Co-Chair for several IEEE activities that include the Future Networks International Network Generations Roadmap (INGR), Applications and Services WG, Young Professionals Education, IEEE SA P1950.1 Smart Cities Architecture Standards Development, Transdisciplinary Framework Industry Connections, and the Telehealth Industry Connections. He also contributes to the Public Safety Task Force initiative. Narendra also taught at the George Mason University. His current interests include comprehensive transdisciplinary framework development, 5G and network convergence, connected communities, and related ecosystems.

 

Panel 5: “Standardization for UAVs and Drones”

Kamesh Namuduri
Kamesh Namuduri is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and the director of Autonomous Systems Laboratory at the University of North Texas (UNT). He received his B.S. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Osmania University, India, in 1984, M.S. degree in Computer Science from University of Hyderabad in 1986, and Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from University of South Florida in 1992. Over the past eleven years, his research is focused on aerial networking and communications. He co-organized a series of workshops on “Airborne Networking and Communications” in conjunction with IEEE, AIAA, AUVSI, and ACM Conferences. He is serving as the chair for two Standards Working Groups (IEEE 1920.1: Aerial Communications and Networking and IEEE P1920.2: Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications for Unmanned Aircraft Systems). He is serving as the Chair for the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society’s Ad Hoc Committee on Drones. He is a co-editor for the book titled “UAV Networks and Communications” published by the Cambridge University Press in 2017. He is leading the Smart and Connected Community project on “Deployable Communication Systems” in collaboration with the government, public, and private organizations. This living laboratory project was demonstrated thrice during the Global City Teams Challenge hosted jointly by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and US Ignite in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. He contributed to the development of research agenda, requirements and blueprints highly deployable communications systems led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and National Public Safety Telecommunications Council.

  • John Scull Walker (The Padina Group, USA)
John Scull Walker
John Scull Walker has 56 years of aviation experience in air traffic control, airspace management and airport development skills. John’s career includes thirty-two years with the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and four years with the United States Air Force. His last FAA assignment was served in Washington, DC as the Senior Executive, Director of Airspace Management, responsible for management of all civil airspace within the United States. Prior to this assignment John was the FAA Senior Executive, Eastern Region Air Traffic Division Manager in New York City, responsible for all air traffic operations in the Northeast sector of the United States. John is currently the principal partner in The Padina Group, an aerospace consulting practice formed to provide executive consulting services focused on emerging aerospace technologies including airspace integration, airworthiness, system safety analysis, industry standards, policy making and new business development for government, industry and academic customers worldwide. John serves as the Chairperson of the ISO UAS Committee (ISO TC20/SC16), developing industry recommended global standards for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and serves as a subject matter expert on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) RPAS Panel as a member of the United States / FAA Delegation and Co Rapporteur of the Air Traffic Management Work Group. He also serves on the European UAS Standards Coordination Group. He currently participates with the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) Emerging Technologies Airspace Committee as the Vice Chair for the Airspace sub-committee, Industry Vice Chair for the Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems (JARUS) and a member of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) Industry Advisory Committee.

 

  • Xingqin Lin (Master Researcher, Ericsson Silicon Valley, USA)
Xingqin Lin is a Master Researcher at Ericsson Silicon Valley, driving 5G/6G research and standardization in strategic focus areas. He serves on the Ericsson NextGen Advisory Board, collaborating with Ericsson Executive Team on transformational projects. He is an expert in wireless communications and technology strategy and a key contributor to 5G NR, NB-IoT, and LTE standards. His pioneering work has led to strategic opportunities, products, and real-world deployments in the telecom industry, enabling major network transitions from 4G to 5G. He received the 2020 IEEE Communications Society Best Young Professional Award in Industry, the 2021 IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Early Career Award, the 2021 IEEE Communications Society Fred W. Ellersick Prize, among others. He is co-author of the book “Wireless Communications and Networking for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles” and the lead editor of the book “5G and Beyond: Fundamentals and Standards.” He is an IET Fellow, an IEEE Senior Member, an IET Fellow Assessor, and a Global Juror for Ericsson Innovation Awards.

Gunes Karabulut Kurt
Gunes Karabulut Kurt received the B.S. degree with high honors in electronics and electrical engineering from the Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 2000 and the M.A.Sc. and the Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Ottawa, ON, Canada, in 2002 and 2006, respectively. From 2000 to 2005, she was a Research Assistant with the CASP Group, University of Ottawa. Between 2005 and 2006, she was with TenXc Wireless, Canada. From 2006 to 2008, she was with Edgewater Computer Systems Inc., Canada. From 2008 to 2010, she was with Turkcell Research and Development Applied Research and Technology, Istanbul. Between 2010 and 2021, she was with Istanbul Technical University. She is currently an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Polytechnique Montreal, Montreal, QC, Canada. She is a Marie Curie Fellow and has received the Turkish Academy of Sciences Outstanding Young Scientist (TUBA-GEBIP) Award in 2019. She is an adjunct research professor at Carleton University. She is also currently serving as an Associate Technical Editor (ATE) of the IEEE Communications Magazine and as a member of the IEEE WCNC Steering Board.

Walid Saad
Walid Saad received his Ph.D degree from the University of Oslo in 2010. Currently, he is a Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech where he leads the Network sciEnce, Wireless, and Security (NEWS) laboratory. His research interests include wireless networks, machine learning, game theory, and cyber-physical systems. Dr. Saad was the author/co-author of ten conference best paper awards , of the 2019 and 2021 IEEE ComSoc Young Author Best Paper Award, and of the 2015 IEEE ComSoc Fred W. Ellersick Prize. He is an IEEE Fellow and a recipient of several awards from Virginia Tech including the Dean’s award for research and the College of Engineering Faculty Fellowship.

Valeria Loscri
Valeria Loscri is a permanent research scientist at Inria Lille – Nord Europe since October 2013. From December 2006 to September 2013, she was research fellow in the TITAN Lab at the University of Calabria, Italy. She received her M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in computer science in 2003 and 2007, respectively, from the University of Calabria and her HDR (Habilitation a diriger des recherches) in 2018 from the Universite de Lille (France). Her prominent research interests focus on emerging technologies for new communication paradigms such as Visible Light Communication (VLC), reconfigurable Intelligent (Meta)Surfaces (RIM) based systems and cyber security in wireless communication systems. She has been involved in several European Projects (H2020 CyberSANE, FP7 EU VITAL) and national projects. She is on the editorial board of IEEE COMST, Elsevier ComNet, ComCom, JNCA, IEEE Transaction on NanoBioscience. Since 2019, she is Scientific International Delegate for Inria Lille – Nord Europe.

Vuk Marojevic/strong> is an associate professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Mississippi State University, Starkville, MS, USA. He graduated from University of Hannover, Germany, and Barcelona Tech (UPC), Spain, with an MS and a Ph.D in electrical engineering. He is a principal investigator of the NSF projects AERPAW and Open Artificial Intelligence Cellular (OAIC). His research interests include mobile communications, software radios, spectrum sharing, wireless testbeds and testing, and wireless security with application to mission-critical communications, open radio access network, and unmanned aircraft systems. He is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology and the IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine.
